Maciej Zdanowicz (ur. 1982, Polska) – artysta intermedialny, teoretyk sztuki i kurator. Tworzy formy na pograniczu mediów, łącząc obraz, dźwięk, tekst i materię. Jego praktyka rozwija się w przestrzeni sztuki współczesnej, refleksji teoretycznej i działań społecznych. W swoich projektach podejmuje tematy pamięci, traumy i przemiany, analizując ich wpływ na współczesne doświadczenie jednostki i wspólnoty. Szczególne miejsce w jego twórczości zajmuje Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia – przestrzeń pęknięć, napięć i ciągłej redefinicji, w której historia i współczesność nakładają się na siebie, tworząc nowe formy wrażliwości i oporu. W ostatnich latach Zdanowicz koncentruje się na Ukrainie, traktując sztukę jako narzędzie współobecności, troski i budowania wspólnoty w czasie wojny. Jego prace – instalacje, filmy i środowiska dźwiękowe – łączą dokument z poetyką materii i dźwięku, a osobiste doświadczenie z pamięcią zbiorową.

Pracuje na stanowisku adiunkta na Wydziale Sztuki Uniwersytetu Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach, gdzie prowadzi autorską Pracownię Struktur Intermedialnych i Mechanizmów Widzenia – przestrzeń twórczą i intelektualną poświęconą badaniom nad złożonością medium, językiem artystycznym, percepcją i napięciami w tkance społecznej – oraz współtworzy Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej ArtLAB. W ramach działalności dydaktycznej prowadzi wykłady z zakresu sztuki XX i XXI wieku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem intermedialności, hybrydyczności i zjawisk pogranicznych. Zdanowicz rozwija projekty badawczo-artystyczne łączące różnorodne środowiska artystyczne i akademickie Europy, poszukując wspólnego języka między teorią, praktyką i doświadczeniem społecznym. Jest autorem licznych wystaw indywidualnych, projektów kuratorskich, tekstów krytycznych i artykułów naukowych poświęconych sztuce nowoczesnej i współczesnej. Laureat Stypendium Artystycznego Prezydenta Miasta Łodzi (2017), nagrody Miejskiej Galerii Sztuki w Łodzi oraz wyróżnienia na I Ogólnopolskiej Wystawie Rysunku Studenckiego w Toruniu. W 2025 roku odbył rezydencję artystyczno-badawczą w Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture (DCCC) w ramach programu Culture Moves Europe (Creative Europe / Goethe-Institut). Członek AICA, ATINER oraz kolegium redakcyjnego pisma „Visual Studies” (St. Cyril and St. Methodius University, Bułgaria). Współpracuje jako ekspert z instytucjami kultury, dyplomacji i edukacji wyższej w Polsce i Europie.

Absolwent Państwowego Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych im. Artura Grottgera w Supraślu (2002), Wydziału Grafiki i Malarstwa Akademii Sztuk Pięknych im. Władysława Strzemińskiego w Łodzi. Dyplom z wyróżnieniem uzyskał w pracowniach prof. Bogusława Balickiego, prof. Romany Hałat. W 2015 r. uzyskał stopień doktora sztuk pięknych na Wydziale Pedagogicznym i Artystycznym Uniwersytetu Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach.

Artist Statement:

Moja praktyka artystyczna rozwija się na styku intermediów, badań i sztuki zaangażowanej społecznie. Interesuje mnie, jak formy wizualne, dźwiękowe i materialne mogą przekładać kruchość ludzkiego postrzegania na wspólne doświadczenie emocjonalne. W centrum moich działań znajduje się stan przeciążenia, zmęczenia i niepokoju, który odczytuję nie tylko jako objaw współczesności, ale także jako sejsmograf naszych czasów. Tworzę formy na granicy mediów i doświadczeń, w miejscach, gdzie obraz spotyka się z dźwiękiem, ciało z materią, a pamięć z zapomnieniem. Interesuje mnie graniczność – nie jako linia podziału, lecz przestrzeń napięcia, spotkania i przemiany. Moje prace są kruchymi archiwami emocji, gestów i milczenia, rejestrują kolizje tego, co osobiste i zbiorowe, intymne i katastroficzne.

Ważnym kontekstem mojej twórczości jest geografia pograniczy – miejsc, które noszę w sobie i w których pracuję. Lwów i Gorajec to przestrzenie pamięci, naznaczone pęknięciami historii i współczesnymi napięciami kulturowymi. Dniepr i Charków są miastami przyfrontowymi, w których sztuka staje się aktem trwania i świadectwem życia w cieniu wojny. Frankfurt nad Odrą i Słubice to pogranicze, gdzie granica polityczna zamienia się w metaforę współistnienia, dialogu i europejskiej wspólnoty.

Współpraca z artystami, studentami i społecznościami w czasie wojny odmieniła moje rozumienie sztuki. Stała się ona formą troski, współobecności i solidarności. Instalacje, filmy i środowiska dźwiękowe, które tworzę, dokumentują stany zawieszenia, trwania i godności, próbując dotknąć tego, co wymyka się słowom. Traktuję sztukę jako pracę terenową, praktykę słuchania i ucieleśniania doświadczeń. To podróż przez miejsca konfliktu i pojednania, przez wspomnienia krystalizujące się w soli, glinie i dźwięku. Moja twórczość łączy wymiar symboliczny i materialny, zestawiając pejzaże traumy z gestami uzdrawiania i próbą odbudowy równowagi.

Jako artysta Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej działam w przestrzeni ciągłego pogranicza – regionie balansującym między utopią a wyczerpaniem, przeszłością a przyszłością, ciszą a przemocą. Sztuka jest dla mnie sposobem rozumienia świata i próbą zachowania równowagi. To proces przekładu, w którym hałas zamienia się w formę, lęk w czułość, a brak w obecność.

Maciej Zdanowicz (born 1982, Poland) is an intermedia artist, art theorist, and curator. He creates forms at the intersection of media, combining image, sound, text, and material. His practice develops within the space of contemporary art, theoretical reflection, and socially engaged activity. In his projects, he explores themes of memory, trauma, and transformation, analyzing their impact on the contemporary experience of the individual and the collective. A particular focus of his work is Central and Eastern Europe—a space of fractures, tensions, and ongoing redefinitions, where history and contemporaneity overlap to generate new forms of sensitivity and resistance. In recent years, Zdanowicz has concentrated on Ukraine, treating art as a tool of presence, care, and community-building in times of war. His works—installations, films, and sound environments—combine documentary traces with the poetics of matter and sound, linking personal experience with collective memory.

He works as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Art, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, where he runs the Studio of Intermedia Structures and Mechanisms of Vision—a creative and intellectual space dedicated to research on the complexity of the medium, artistic language, perception, and social tensions—and co-directs the ArtLAB Center for Contemporary Art. His teaching focuses on 20th- and 21st-century art, with particular attention to intermediality, hybridity, and the aesthetics of the in-between. Zdanowicz develops research and artistic projects that connect diverse artistic and academic communities across Europe, seeking a shared language between theory, practice, and social experience. He is the author of numerous solo exhibitions, curatorial projects, critical essays, and scholarly publications devoted to modern and contemporary art. He has received the Artistic Scholarship of the Mayor of Łódź (2017), the Award of the City Art Gallery in Łódź, and an honorable mention at the 1st National Student Drawing Exhibition in Toruń. In 2025, he completed a research and artistic residency at the Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture (DCCC) within the framework of the Culture Moves Europe program (Creative Europe / Goethe-Institut). He is a member of AICA, ATINER, and the editorial board of the journal Visual Studies (St. Cyril and St. Methodius University, Bulgaria). He also collaborates as an expert with cultural, diplomatic, and higher education institutions in Poland and across Europe.

Zdanowicz graduated from the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Supraśl (2002) and the Faculty of Graphics and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, where he received a diploma with distinction under Professors Bogusław Balicki and Romana Hałat. In 2015, he obtained a PhD in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Pedagogy and Arts, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce.

Artist Statement:

My artistic practice unfolds at the intersection of intermedia, research, and socially engaged art. I am interested in how visual, sonic, and material forms can translate the fragility of human perception into a shared emotional experience. At the core of my work lies a state of sensory overload, fatigue, and anxiety, which I perceive not only as a symptom of contemporary life but also as a sensitive seismograph of our times. I create forms on the threshold of media and experience, in places where image meets sound, body meets matter, and memory meets forgetting. I am drawn to the notion of liminality — not as a dividing line, but as a space of tension, encounter, and transformation. My works function as fragile archives of emotions, gestures, and silences, registering collisions between the personal and the collective, the intimate and the catastrophic.

An essential context of my practice is the geography of borderlands — places I carry within me and where I continue to work. Lviv and Gorajec are spaces of memory marked by historical ruptures and ongoing cultural tensions. Dnipro and Kharkiv are frontline cities where art becomes an act of endurance and a testimony to life lived in the shadow of war. Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice form a border zone where a political frontier turns into a metaphor of coexistence, dialogue, and a fragile European unity.

Collaborating with artists, students, and local communities during wartime has profoundly reshaped my understanding of art. It has become a form of care, presence, and solidarity. The installations, films, and sound environments I create document states of suspension, persistence, and dignity, attempting to touch what escapes language. I treat art as a field practice — a process of listening, translation, and embodiment. It is a journey through sites of conflict and reconciliation, through memories crystallized in salt, clay, and sound. My practice intertwines the symbolic and the material, juxtaposing landscapes of trauma with gestures of healing and the search for balance.

As an artist from Central and Eastern Europe, I work within a constant borderland—a region that balances between utopia and exhaustion, past and future, silence and violence. For me, art is a way of understanding the world and preserving a sense of equilibrium. It is an act of translation, where noise turns into form, fear into tenderness, and absence into presence.
